The Great Spirit Bear

“This is an essay this explains the symbolism the Spirit Bear represents in the story Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen”

Did you know that some stories have an animal that symbolizes the whole story or is one of the main icons in a book? In the book Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelson there is a bear that is the main icon besides the main character; this bear is also a huge piece of symbolism in the story. It’s very important to have at least one big character or object that is a very important piece of symbolism in a story.

Often the Spirit Bear appears many times in this story, and it is a big part of this story, it’s even in the title. Cole Matthews relies on this bear in the story; he learns how to control his anger and learns patience as well. Without this bear, Cole would never have learned his lesson; he would have still been a bad kid. Cole first learned of this bear when Edwin told him that there is a rare species of bear called the Spirit Bear. But like always Cole didn’t care about anything and ignored everything. A little farther in the story Cole tries to attack the bear, but the bear comes back and mauls him up and that’s when we learns not to mess with the Spirit Bear and not to be so selfish and angry. After that whole incident, the Bear still stalks Cole from time to time and Cole learns not to mess with the bear and let it live. The Spirit Bear then goes on and leaves Cole alone never coming to close to him again.

There is lots of symbolism in this story but the Spirit Bear has the most over all, because it’s one of the big things in this story that causes the big climax. The climax of the Story is when Cole learns his lesson, and when he learns all the dances and everything that is good. Cole ends up learning all those things that happened because the Spirit Bear taught him not to take his anger out on the innocent, I personally think that Cole got that because what he did to Peter when Cole beat him up. That bear has the most symbolism in the story out of anything in the story because it ends up helping Cole a huge amount in the end.

If the Spirit Bear was not in this story, lots and lots of things would have never happened. For example, Cole would have never learned his lesson, there would have been no anger dances, no forgiveness, and Cole would have probably ended up dying on that island without that bear. It gave him the strength to change, it gave everything to Cole that he needed. The story would just be like any other story where the bad guy loses, Cole would have ended up in jail for the rest of his life, and maybe even end up killing someone. Who knows what would of happened to Cole if the Spirit Bear wasn’t there to make the story a story.

It is very clear that all stories need to have at least one important piece of symbolism. The Spirit Bear means a lot in this story if there was no bear there wouldn’t be the great story of Touching Spirit Bear.
