New Cole to Old Cole

“This is a creative piece about, the new Cole writing to the old Cole about what he needs to change and what he needs to do differently in his life.”

Dear Cole,

It’s you from the future; I’ve got a couple good tips for you, you need to change. First of all when you get to the island, don’t try to escape or burn down your shelter like I did. Trust me, I’m you and you do not want to destroy our shelter because there were a lot of useful things that you could have used to help you survive. Another thing is that you are not going to want to attack the Spirit Bear when you see, because I thought I was stronger than it, but then I ended up getting mauled, torn, and bitten up from the bear, and all of the insects that attacked me. I think that you should just learn how to clean up your anger so you don’t have to worry about being angry all the time.

Cole, you have to listen to me, I’m you, if you’re mad about the way your parents treat you tell someone don’t bottle your anger up, because that’s never good and I learned that here on this island. I’ve learned how to control my anger by swimming in a freezing cold pond every morning, carving into my totem pole, and carrying around my ancestor rock. I really need you to clean your act up so we don’t ever have to go through this, if you learn to control your anger and be the bigger man by not hurting people or stealing things we will all be fine.

I think instead of making enemies you make friends, because once again I know I’m you, people don’t like you Cole. People don’t even like me but that’s the reason why I want you to change, for you, for me, or for everyone that we’ve ever hurt. Being angry all the time isn’t going to get you anywhere. Just remember this, you only live once so try to enjoy it while it lasts. I just really hope you can change your ways for us, we need to be happy for once in our life. I really believe in you Cole, I know you can change. We both know we can change it will just be hard but I know you will and can do it. Good luck past Cole, I’m counting on you, be a better person.

Sincerely,

Cole

"Global Warming"

“This is a short research paper about Global Warming and how it is affecting us and how we can prevent it.”

Have you ever heard of Global Warming? It affects our daily lives every single day of the year, and not just human’s, animals also. Some people say that Global warming does not exist, but there is plenty of good facts that can back up that it is real and that is has already taken action. Global Warming is one of the most dangers slow working weather monsters in the world taking place right now.

According to ‘Nationalgeographic.com’ that arctic ice is rapidly disappearing, they say that by 2040 we might have an ice free summer in the arctic climate places of the world. Which will kill thousands of animals including the Polar Bear, if the way Global Warming is heading the Polar Bear may go extinct as soon as 2035. We the people of the world are the cause of the global warming; we can’t even count the amount of cars on our planet or amount of Carbon Dioxide being polluted into our atmosphere every day. Global Warming has affected multiple places, people just haven’t noticed it yet but we will. Global Warming was first introduced in the early 1980’s, even though they have been going on since the early 1800’s according to statistics on the website “AIP.org”. Since the Arctic areas are warming up, it will cause the ice to melt, and if the ice melts the water levels will rise. Some people state that if the water levels raise places that are surrounded by water for examples Hawaii, Florida, and every single island that lies in the Oceans will be covered in water and under hundreds of feet of water. Our world has 7,000,000,000 people and counting, if the polar caps melt and cover areas where people live, lots of people would lose their homes and there would be a huge shortage of food and clean water.

Generally people don’t really pay attention to Global Warming, some people don’t even believe in it but its here and already taking action. The only way that we can lower the affects of the great Warming is if we take drastic measures and go green. Going green would cut down on the Green House Gases a huge amount, not enough to restore the Earth back to normal but enough to stop Global Warming before it takes real disaster. If we switch to using Solar, Geothermal, and Wind power, and if we figure out a way to cut down the carbon dioxide that we produce from our cars that should lower the levels of carbon dioxide by a great amount. People need to take action by thinking how dangerous Global Warming can actually be to us and our environment.

In the end Global Warming will probably end up winning unless we take action and fight the weather monster. Global Warming is a slow working disaster that will sooner or later destroy our land.

“Patience, Gentleness, Strength, Honesty”

“This is a short essay on the quote “Patience, gentleness, strength, honesty. Animals can teach us more about ourselves than any teacher.” from the book Touching Spirit Bear by Ben Mikaelsen. I will tell what I think about it, how it fits in to the story, and how is it related to the main character.”

Did you know that animals can teach us about ourselves more than any teacher? In the book “Touching Spirit Bear” an old Native American man named Edwin tells Cole a very important quote that finally leads to Coles change in the end. You should always listen to your elders because they may teach you something or tell you something that is very life changing or important.

The quote, “Patience, gentleness, strength, honesty. Animals can teach us more about ourselves than any teacher.” Is a very inspiring quote and it makes tons of sense in this story. Cole is stalked many times and even attack a few times by a big Spirit Bear that follows him in his shadows. That’s the big point in the quote, Edwin tells Cole that “Animals can teach us more about ourselves” which he is obviously talking about the Spirit Bear in that sentence. I think that this quote is probably main quote in this book, because it explains it in that entire quote. All Edwin is telling Cole is that he needs to respect animals more than he does already, because if he doesn’t there going to come back to get him. Cole never cares about what anyone says to him, so he thought he could be the tough guy and take out the Spirit Bear. Later that majorly backfired on him, he ran up to the bear and tried to kill it, but the bear actually ended up attacking him. That is when Cole learns his lesson, and that is where the quote kicks in. Again the quote states that "Animals teach us more about ourselves, more than any teacher could teach us", Cole finally learns much about himself more than he ever has before. Cole learns that he is a better and much stronger person that he once was before, that was the biggest change in young Cole's life.

In the end it is always right to listen to your elders, and respect animals in the end because if you don’t you might have some major consequences down the road. The quote, “Patience, gentleness, strength, honesty. Animals can teach us more about ourselves than any teacher.” Is the most important quote in the story “Touching Spirit Bear”.

“What’s going to happen next?”

"This is a prediction to Chapter 7 in the book "Touching Spirit Bear" By Ben Mikaelson"

What would you do if you had to live on an isolate island in Alaska for a year? The book “Touching Spirit Bear” By Ben Mikaelson, is a story about a juvenile delinquent named Cole that gets sent to an Island in the middle of nowhere somewhere in Alaska for his punishment for all of the crimes he has committed. One crime that he has committed was worse than any of the other crimes he has ever committed; he beat the living out of a young teenager named Peter Driscal for ratting him out, when Cole robbed a hardware store. And that is when he gets sent to the isolated island in Alaska for one year. I think that was a good idea for Cole, because I’m sure he will learn his lesson down the road.

In Chapter 6, of the book “Touching Spirit Bear” Cole is trying to get away from this dreadful island by swimming away, but he doesn’t realize that he isn’t getting far because the tides are pushing him back towards the island. Since the water is bone quivering, Cole’s body won’t let him go any farther, so his legs give out and eventually he floats back to shore. Cole crawls himself over to the recently burnt down shelter than he burned to the ground and falls asleep there. A few hours pass and he wakes up and gets enough strength to move around and make a small fire. He makes a small fire and finds food, and watches the tides waiting for the perfect time to go back out and try swimming away again. That is the end of chapter 6, now I will write what I think will happen in chapter 7.

I predict that in chapter 7, Cole will wait for the perfect time to leave the island by swimming again, and that is where he will fail again and get back to shore like the first time. I also believe that Cole will give up with trying escaping the island, and try to get more comfortable with the land that he is residing on. That is where Cole will see the spirit bear, and he will try to attack it again but this time the bear will come after him and hurt him just like what he did to Peter Driscal. And that will be the end of chapter 7. I believe all of this will happen because everything happens for a reason and a little earlier in the book it said the spirit bear mocked Cole as if it was Cole in the bear. And that is where I get the conclusion that the bear will attack him, because then Cole will get the idea of what he did was wrong. That would make the most sense because Cole needs to learn his lesson, plus this would relate to the quote “What comes around goes around”. And earlier in the book the Indian Head guy told Cole that “People learn more from animals than you think of, more than any teacher could teach you.” And what I was thinking would happen, would fit perfectly into what that Indian head guy told Cole. If that bear attacks Cole like the way attacked Peter, that would make Cole learn his lesson and that is where he would have his big climax change.

Cole will have to learn his lesson down the road because of what I think will happen to him down the road. People have changes all the time, but Cole Matthews change might be the biggest of all, but we just need to keep reading to find out what really happens to Cole farther in the story of “Touching Spirit Bear”.
